CAST Foundry designed Go East for Sardegna East Land project, a website and a strategic plan for tourism
To design Go East, CAST teamed up with Sabina Era, designer of the whole brand identity of SEL. ‘Our starting point,’ say designers Luciano Perondi and Giulio Galli, ’was the existing logotype of SardegnaTurismo. What we did was to pull a system out of it and make it work as a type family. We also add some more experiments to it, because that’s what we like to do.’
‘So we went on building two stencilled fonts with a Variable Stencil axes which means a variable size of the cuts that make it stencil. The reason for this is of practical and systemic nature: one of the two families is a colour font, again to work with the initial Sardinia logotype.’
‘There’s also another reason for the variable cuts in this project (as well as in similar ones). We did it because foreseeing as many scenarios as possible is key in designing custom fonts for branding. In this case, with Go East, we wanted to both give the designer to choose the best visually balanced amount of white space cutting the letter, to make any text match the specific graphic context, and also to make different sized texts match each other.’
