On invitation of Associate Professor Alessandro Colizzi (PoliMi Design department), Russian teacher and typeface designer Ilya Ruderman will hold a Cyrillic typeface design workshop open to the PoliMi students and external applicants searching for a new skill.
Workshop programme
Cyrillic with Ilya Ruderman workshop at Bovisa Campus will take three days (8 hours each), from 10–12 June 2024, and mix analogue (hand drawing on paper) and digital tools (Glyphs, FontLab, Robofab).
Through historical and contemporary examples of calligraphy and Cyrillic types, Ruderman will illustrate the peculiarities of the Cyrillic alphabet and the typographical needs of the different languages that use it. Then, attendees will work on extending a set of Cyrillic glyphs from an existing Latin character.
Ilya Ruderman, from Russia with type

Ilya Ruderman (1979, Moscow) lives and works in Barcelona. As a teacher, since 2007 he has been supervising the curriculum in type and typography at the British Higher School of Art and Design in Moscow. Every year, since 2014, he has been holding a workshop on Cyrillic type design at KABK TypeMedia. As a professional, he collaborated for Kommersant, Afisha, Moskovskiye Novosti, Bolshoi Gorod and Men’s Health Russia; from 2005 to 2007, he was art director for Afisha’s city guidebooks and art director for RIA-Novosti, a news agency. He has been working as a consultant on Cyrillic since 2008. In 2014, he founded CSTM Fonts with Yury Ostromentsky.
Information and registrations
Cyrillic with Ilya Ruderman is hosted by PoliMi Design department and organised in collaboration with CAST foundry. The workshop is open to the PoliMi students. A good comprehension of the English language is mandatory. Registrations close on 31 May, at 12 a.m.
