Futurismo is a counterless all-caps sans with a very simple construction based on circles, triangles, and rectangles. All corners are slightly rounded and several letters display a peculiar thick/thin contrast, even in unexpected instances like the stem of P.

The original Futurismo was released around 1930 by Xilografia Ruggero Zuliani of Verona, the same wood type manufacturer that also produced Assab, another counterless typeface based on basic geometric shapes.

‘In the AM Futurismo digital revival,’ explains the designer Alessandro Bombieri, ‘all edges and terminals have been equally rounded to achieve a more uniform appearance’. The original design was very coarse, and several details of the numerals and other characters had to be refined for greater consistency. However, to stay as true as possible to the original design and keep its rugged and amateurish look, ‘some idiosyncrasies were kept very close to their original shapes, see for instance the organic shapes of C, G and Q’.
