8 Heavy
TTT
Hi, I’m 8 Heavy!
Here’s a ‘revivalish’ typeface with a marked vocation for display and branding. While its name cryptically hints at phototypesetting (and maybe also at the symbol of infinity), its design clearly celebrates the eccentricity and visionary spirit of the psychedelic era
Designed by Giulio Galli and available in one heavy weight, with its distinctive design, 8 draws inspiration from Eightball (one of the iconic typefaces published by Visual Graphic Corporation in the 1970s) and also from the quirky letterforms widely used in the psychedelic rock scene since the mid-1960s.
To promote such a typeface we couldn’t set up a Jefferson Airplane concert nor a psychedelic session with Timothy Leary. So, we asked the internationally renowned senior DJ Hal 9000 to bring us a taste of those early pioneering years, when youth aspired to universal love and self-consciousness.
Finally we’re pleased to share these results with our community: four vibrant lyrics obtained by cutting up some of the most epoch-making songs released between 1964 and 1973 by artists and bands such as The Seeds, Grateful Dead, The 13th Floor Elevators, Chocolate Watchband, The Beatles, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, The Animals, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Steppenwolf, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Iron Butterfly, etc.
Enjoy!
You, who are on the road
Don’t you ever ask them, Why?
When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead,
Must have a code
That you can live by
The girl with the kaleidoscope eyes
Hey hey, hey, oh, by the way, come and (party every day)
Come and join the (party every day)
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Well everybody’s dancin’ in a ring around the sun
Take a vacation, fall out for a while,
Summer’s comin’ in, and it’s goin’ outa style
There is a house way down in New Orleans
I wasn’t born there perhaps I’ll die there
Oh, won’t you come with me
And walk this land
The children are cool, they don’t raise fools
In a gadda da vida, honey
Don’t you know that I’m lovin’ you
If they told you, you would cry
So, just look at them and sigh
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small,
If you can just get your mind together
Teach your parents well
Their children’s hell
Get up and tell you where to go
That your little world won’t let you go
So, are you experienced?
Have you ever been experienced?
Go ask Alice
I think she’ll know.
Always sitting by your side
Always by your side
That cat’s something I can’t explain
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Nobody’s finished, we ain’t even begun
She’s a neon-light diamond and she can live on the street
I would take her out for a while
When I’m ridin’ ’round the world
And I’m doin’ this and I’m
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
I can’t get no satisfaction
‘Cause I try, and I try, and I try, and I try
I can’t get no, I can’t get no
You know the day destroys the night
And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I’m one
Old angels, young angels feel alright
On a warm San Franciscan night
Night divides the day
Tried to run
Tried to hide
In a gadda da vida, baby
Break on through to the other side
When I’m watchin’ my TV
And a man comes on and
Picture yourself in a boat on a river
With tangerine trees and tells me
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
I can’t get no, oh, no, no, no, hey, hey, hey
That’s what I say
When I saw the lady smile
cause I’m not like everybody else,
Oh, my tears wept like a child
Summoning my soul to endless sleep
And everything under the sun is in tune
Soaring high above the breezes
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon
It’s an American dream, includes Indians too
I found an island in your arms
So limitless and free
The gate is straight
Deep and wide
And all the children are insane
Break on through to the other side, yeah
The blue bus is calling us
Made the scene
Lost in a Roman wilderness of pain
The killer awoke before dawn
And all that you buy
Beg, borrow or steal
She is calling from the deep
But darling, you know that I love you true,
And all that you say
And all that you eat
And everyone you meet
cause I’m not like everybody else
You’re gonna wake up one morning as the sun greets the dawn
Then maybe you’ll understand the song, it will be worth it
There’s one thing that I will say to you,
You’re gonna look around in your mind, girl, you’re gonna find that
I’m gone
cause I’m not like everybody else,
You didn’t realize
Strobe lights beam creates dreams
Walls move minds do too
On a warm San Franciscan night
Well, I have
Let me prove it to you
Take the world in a love embrace
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
Trumpets and violins, I can hear in the distance
Fire all of your guns at once
If you’re going to San Francisco
Gentle people with flowers in their hair
Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful
Head out on the highway
Looking for adventure
All across the nation such a strange vibration
In whatever comes our way
This is the end, beautiful friend
Try to set the night on fire
Kill you for me, my friend, and me for you
And brothers, can’t you see?
You know that I would be a liar
This is not the way we put the end to war
Flowers growin’ round the church house steeple
Who’s to live and who’s to die
Well, I’m so tired of crying
But I’m out on the road again
Hand in hand we walk out the door
Out in the rain and snow
And the wind blows your hair
They come from here and there and you and me
Angels singing as we pass through the door
You know the first time I traveled
The scent of flowers fills the air
